How to Be a Better Muslim:Be Kind to Parents

BY
Hafsa Mubarik

Islam is a complete comprehensive way of life. It teaches us how one should live in society, how we should maintain good relationships with people and how to take care of our families. Just as Allah has given the responsibility of children to their parents, He has instructed children to take care of their parents in the same way. Islam lays  great emphasis on the kind, respectful and tolerant treatment of parents.

In one Hadith being good to one’s parents is second to Salah among the best deeds one can do please Allah.

Narrated Ibn Masud: A man asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) “What deeds are the best?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: (1) To perform the (daily compulsory) prayers at their (early) stated fixed times, (2) To be good and dutiful to one’s own parents. (3) and to participate in Jihad in Allah’s Cause.” Sahih Al-Bukhari – Book 93 Hadith 625

From our birth, our parents take care of all our needs, nurture us with love, support us whenever we are going through something, pray for us and never leave us alone in any situation. No one in this world can be as great as your parents. They'll be the most selfless persons in your life who only wish good for you and want nothing else in return. Who will cheer you up every time you feel down. They are the purest form of love you can find on this Earth.

No matter how strict or kind your parents were, you should always treat them with tenderness and warmth. In the 23rd verse of Surah Isra Allah subhan wa tala says, : "And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age (while) with you, say not to them (so much as), “uff”, and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.”

We should always treat them in a gentle way. Appreciate your parents because you don't know what sacrifices they have made for you.

I believe parents are the sweetest creatures of Almighty Allah in this universe. I can go on and on this and still the pages will come short. It is only good if you repay your parents with compassion and love. It is the only thing they want from you.

Abu Huraira reported that a person came to Allah,'s Messenger (may peace be upon him) and said : "Who among the people is most deserving of a fine treatment from my hand ? He said : Your mother. He again said : Then who (is the next one) ? He said: Again it is your mother (who deserves the best treatment from you). He said: Then who (is the next one) ? He (the Holy Prophet) said : Again, it is your mother. He (again) said: Then who? Thereupon he said: ``Then it is your father."

In Quran Allah has commanded us multiple times to be kind towards our parents and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) reportedly instructed his companions to take good care of their parents. We should talk to them gently, make time for them, take care of their needs, and pray for them. There's this prayer we should always say for our parents:

" My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small" (17:24).

May Almighty Allah make us among the ones whom He loves and make us serve our parents the way Allah has instructed us to.
